Side Buggy Safari for First-Timers and Families: What the Day Involves
Most of the guests on our Side Buggy Safari have never sat in a buggy before, and a good share of them arrive with kids. So instead of hype, here is a clear picture of who the tour suits, how hard it actually is, and how to plan it as a family day.
Who this tour is for
The buggy safari suits anyone who wants a proper adrenaline hit without needing any off-road background. The buggies are automatic and forgiving, the pace is set sensibly for the group, and the route runs on our own customised track through the Side forest, dirt roads, forest paths, rocky sections, mud, and water-splash stops. If the idea of engine noise, flying dust, and coming back filthy makes you grin, you are the target audience.
It is honestly not the right pick for guests who want to stay clean and composed: that is what the region's boat and sightseeing days are for, and our complete Side excursions guide maps those out.
Never driven anything off-road? Here is how we handle it
Every tour starts the same way, whether you are a novice or a veteran:
- A full briefing from our professional instructors, driving dynamics, the track, and the safety rules.
- Safety gear fitted at the base before anyone moves.
- A supervised test drive, so you build real control of the vehicle before the route begins.
Who drives is a question of skill, not paperwork: guests who handle the buggy confidently after the test drive take the wheel, and anyone who would rather not drive rides as a passenger, same track, same laughs, none of the responsibility. Nobody is pushed onto the track until our instructors are satisfied, and a guide leads the group throughout.
Ages and the family setup
- Driving: minimum age 16.
- Passengers: from age 6, securely belted in the seat next to the driver.
- Pricing: adults €30, children €18, infants free.
The classic family formation is one parent driving with a child belted in alongside: the buggies are two-seaters built exactly for this. Teenagers of 16 and over can take the wheel themselves after the same briefing and test drive as everyone else, which tends to be the highlight of their entire holiday. Full cost details, including the few optional extras, are in our prices guide.
How hard is it, really?
Honestly: the driving itself is easy, automatic transmission, clear instructions, a guide up front. What you should expect is bumpy, dusty, and muddy. The track is rugged by design, and approximately 1.5 to 2 hours of seat time is a real physical activity, not a fairground ride. Two cautions:
- Back or neck issues? Choose the passenger seat rather than driving, and tell us at booking.
- Small children: the age-6 minimum for passengers exists because the track shakes. If your six-year-old hates bumpy rides, they will not magically love this one.
That said, the tour is engineered so beginners succeed: high safety standards, professional infrastructure, and instructors who watch the group rather than race off. Nervous first-timers routinely finish asking about the wilder River Side track option for round two.
How the family day flows
The whole outing takes around 4 hours, which is the sweet spot with kids: a full adventure that still leaves pool time. Transfer collects you from your hotel, you ride, you hose off in the showers and changing cabins at our base, and the transfer returns you. With several sessions running daily, morning or afternoon, it slots around nap times and dinner plans; we confirm your pickup personally when you book.
Pack a complete change of clothes for every rider — the single non-negotiable — plus the rest of the short list in our what to bring and wear guide. Remember ID for whoever drives; it is required at the base.
Booking without risk
This is where families relax: reservation is free, you pay on the tour day, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before. A child waking up ill or plans shifting costs you nothing. We are Atalay Tours, the direct local operator — no middlemen, no hidden costs — so the price quoted is the price paid, and the people answering your questions on WhatsApp are the same team meeting you at the base.
