Horse Riding in Side: The Best Month, and Whether Summer Is Too Hot

Summer is not too hot for the Side ride, because the ride is an hour long and scheduled around the heat. April to June and September to October are still the most comfortable months - here is the honest trade-off, including the long trousers.

April to June and September to October are the most comfortable months for a ride through the countryside behind Side. But summer is not the write-off people expect: the ride lasts about an hour, much of the route is shaded pine forest, and departures are scheduled in the morning and late afternoon specifically to avoid the hottest part of the day. The genuinely uncomfortable part of an August ride is not the sun on the trail — it is the dress code.

The ride, and what does not change with the month

It is one hour in the saddle at €40 per adult, with hotel pickup and drop-off in the Side area included. You meet the horses at a local ranch, get a helmet and a short lesson on how to sit, steer and stop, then follow pine-forest paths that open towards the coast for a section along the Mediterranean shoreline. A guide stays with the group throughout, and the horses are chosen for calm temperament and matched to each rider. Reservation is free, you pay on the tour day, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before.

Rides are listed daily year-round, so no month closes this off. What the calendar changes is comfort, not availability.

The long-trousers problem

Our kit list is not negotiable and it is the real seasonal issue: long trousers and closed shoes — no sandals or flip-flops. That is standard riding safety, and it is the same in August as in April. Nobody minds jeans in October. In the middle of a Turkish summer, an hour in long trousers is the cost of the ticket, and it is worth knowing before you book rather than while you are being handed a helmet.

If you are riding in July or August, take the morning or the late-afternoon departure — that is exactly what they exist for — and bring water, sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat. Both windows also give you better light for the beach section, which is the photograph everybody comes home with.

Month by month, briefly

  • April to June: the best of it. Cool enough for long trousers to be irrelevant, green countryside, and the shoreline stretch at its most pleasant.
  • July and August: entirely doable on an early or late departure. Treat the hour as an early-morning outing rather than a midday activity and it works well.
  • September and October: arguably the pick of the year. The heat has dropped out, the light is soft, and the beach section is at its emptiest.
  • Winter: rides continue, but weather is the variable — in bad conditions a ride may be moved or refunded in full.

The heat alternative, if an hour outdoors is not the day you want

On a genuinely punishing summer day, the honest recommendation is a water day instead. The Green Lake and Hidden Paradise trip from Side is a seven-hour nature excursion at €40 per adult with hotel transfers, guiding, a catamaran ride on Green Lake and lunch included — about an hour of swimming at the lake and around two hours at the Hidden Paradise pools below small waterfalls. It has its own seasonal note worth knowing: in hot summer months the flow at Manavgat Waterfall can be limited, while the catamaran ride always runs.

Some guests do both in one week, and that is the sensible split — the ride in the cool of a morning, the water day when the forecast turns serious.

Who should not book the ride

This one has real limits and we would rather state them here. It is not suitable for pregnant guests or anyone with serious back or mobility problems. The recommended maximum rider weight is approximately 100–110 kg (220–240 lbs), for the horses' welfare, not as a formality. The minimum age is generally 6 years, with the final call made by the guide on the day; young children can ride with a staff member walking at the horse's head throughout.

And be clear about the pace. This is a walking ride. Riders who can demonstrate genuine experience may be offered a controlled faster stretch where the ground and the guide allow — a possibility, never a promise, and never forced on anyone. If you have booked in the hope of galloping down a beach, that is the expectation to adjust, not the tour.

One practical footnote: pickup is from your hotel's main entrance gate, and hotels in some outlying resort areas may carry a small transfer supplement.

Book your hour

Reserve the Side horse riding tour with hotel pickup for the pine forest and the shoreline stretch, or take the Green Lake and Hidden Paradise day trip if the forecast says water. Both are listed among our Side tours and excursions.

Filling in the rest of the week? Start with which Side excursion to choose, check the best time to visit Green Canyon for the region's other water day, and if you are looking for the coolest hour of an August afternoon, the best time for a hammam in Side makes the case for going indoors.
