Green Canyon Day Trip from Antalya: Eight Hours on Oymapınar Lake
The Experience
Antalya sits a good way west of the canyon, so this is a day trip in the proper sense: roughly eight hours door to door from a central Antalya hotel, with the drive climbing away from the coast into the pine country above Manavgat. What you are heading for is not the sea but a reservoir, the water backed up behind the Oymapınar Dam, which rises sheer at the head of the gorge and is worth the journey on its own. The boat runs the length of it, past cliffs standing hundreds of metres above the surface, into inlets where the only sound is the engine dropping to idle. Then the swimming. The reservoir is fed from the mountains and stays cool right through the summer, which is either the best thing about the day or a shock, depending on the swimmer. Anyone who would rather not get in has the shaded deck, and plenty of guests spend the whole day there quite happily. Lunch is an open buffet aboard: grilled chicken, fresh salads, fruit in season. The fare of €42 for adults and €25 for children also covers the return transfer, local taxes, passenger insurance and an English-speaking guide. Drinks aboard, photo and video service and tips are not included. Infants under four go free, four to eleven pay the child rate, and nothing is paid until the day itself.
