First Time Diving in Side: The Beginner & Family Guide

Never dived before? Perfect — that's who this tour is for. How the day eases you in (5–8 m morning dive, then the 12–13 m Underwater Museum), honest difficulty talk, groups of 3–4 per instructor, the family math with child and visitor rates, health limits, and why your first dive here comes with sunken statues.

Your First Dive Ever: On Holiday, With a Museum Under the Water

Most of the people who step onto our dive boat have never breathed underwater in their lives. That is exactly who the Side Scuba Diving & Underwater Museum Tour was built for: the person who has always wondered, standing on a holiday beach, close enough to finally find out. No prior experience is required, and the reward for trying is not a bare patch of sand but the Side Underwater Museum, one of Europe's most unusual dive sites, where statues and historic exhibits rest on the seabed.

How the Day Eases You In

The structure of this 7-hour day is deliberately gentle. After pickup from your Side hotel, you board our custom-built dive boat and the briefing begins, underwater hand signals, how the breathing regulator works, how your equipment fits. Nothing is rushed and nothing is assumed.

  • Morning dive: 5–8 metres, 15–25 minutes. A true introduction, shallow enough to feel safe, deep enough to be surrounded by marine life.
  • Lunch on deck. Freshly prepared, included, and timed so you rest properly between dives.
  • Afternoon dive: 12–13 metres, through the Underwater Museum. By now the regulator feels normal, and you spend the dive gliding past sunken sculptures and hand-feeding fish beside your instructor.

You are never anonymous in a crowd: our certified dive masters take groups of just three to four guests underwater. That ratio is the single biggest reason nervous beginners come up grinning.

How Hard Is It?

Easier than most first-timers expect, but let's be truthful rather than salesy. The strange part is the first two minutes, convincing your brain that breathing underwater is allowed. Almost everyone gets past it during the shallow morning dive with an instructor at arm's length. You do not need to be a strong swimmer or particularly fit; you need to be comfortable in water and able to follow a briefing. If the first dive tells you diving is not your thing, you spend the afternoon snorkeling and sunbathing on deck, still a great boat day, no shame in it.

Two limits, and we hold to them firmly: the tour is not suitable for pregnant women or individuals with severe asthma, heart, or respiratory conditions, and you must not fly within 24 hours after your last dive, so schedule this at least a day before your flight home.

The Family Math

This tour works for mixed families precisely because nobody is forced underwater:

  • Adults dive for €45, the adult rate applies from age 12, with everything included: equipment, wetsuit, instructor, insurance, two dives, lunch, and hotel transfers.
  • Children join at €27 and infants free. Whether a child actually dives or enjoys the day as a snorkeling boat guest depends on their comfort and health: our instructors decide generously on the side of safety, so tell us ages when you book.
  • Non-divers book as visitors at a reduced rate, grandparents, nervous partners, and designated photographers get the cruise, the lunch, and snorkeling from the spacious deck.

So a family of four where only dad dives does not pay four diver prices. The full arithmetic, including the short list of things that cost extra, like drinks on board and optional underwater photos, is in our diving prices guide.

Why Beginners Should Care About the Museum

Plenty of first dives around the Mediterranean show you a nice rock and some fish. This one takes you through an actual curated underwater museum, soldier statues, a mermaid, temple columns, sunken exhibits, at a depth of 12–13 metres that a first-timer can reach on their second dive of the day. It also gives your dive a story: certified divers get their logbook officially signed and stamped, and beginners can take their first steps toward international CMAS certification right from our boat if the day lights a spark.

Booking Without the Usual Holiday Anxiety

Because we are Atalay Tours, the local operator, the booking terms stay human: reservation is free, you pay on the tour day, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before. If a child wakes up seasick or plans change, you are not fighting a refund form. Your pickup details are confirmed personally the evening before, so the morning starts calm.

Pack light, our what-to-bring guide fits everything in one beach bag, and if you have a question we have not covered here, it is almost certainly in the diving FAQ. The water is warm, the statues are waiting, and our instructors have turned thousands of "maybe next year" people into divers. Dates and booking are on the tour page.
