The Experience

Nine hours door to door aboard the Starcraft, masts up and pirate rigging out, moored in the harbour beneath the castle: this is the longer of the two big galleon days we sail from Alanya. The coast does most of the work. Once the Red Tower slides astern, the ship runs past the shorelines everyone photographs, the faint underwater glow of the Phosphorus Cave, then Pirates Cave, then Cleopatra Beach, with the castle walls stacked above all of it. The stops are the real point, though. In each sheltered bay the anchor drops and you can jump straight off the deck, snorkel across the rocky shallows or float in water clear enough to count the pebbles. In between, the animation team turns the music up and the foam takes over. Lunch is cooked fresh and eaten in the open air, and passenger insurance, the English-speaking crew and your return transfer from central Alanya are part of the fare. Extra: anything from the bar, whether soft drinks, beer or cocktails, plus photographs, tips and spending money. Pickup from far-flung resorts is not covered either, so ask us before you assume. Children aged four to eleven pay a reduced fare and infants up to three travel free. Non-swimmers do perfectly well here because the deck is where the fun lives, but guests with serious mobility limitations should let us point them somewhere gentler. Nothing is payable until the day itself, and cancelling costs nothing up to 24 hours ahead.
