What to Bring and Wear on a Manavgat Boat Tour: A Local's Packing List

A grounded packing list for the Manavgat river cruise and bazaar day: swim gear for the delta, the right shoes and clothing for the Grand Bazaar, cash tips for haggling, and what to leave at the hotel.

The Manavgat day trip is really two outings stitched together: a river cruise with swimming, and a walk through one of the region's biggest markets. Pack for one and forget the other, and you'll either shiver in wet shorts among the spice stalls or roast in jeans on deck. Here's what we tell our own guests to bring, based on running the Manavgat River Boat Cruise & Grand Bazaar Day from Side and the Alanya version via Green Canyon all season.

The non-negotiables

  • Swimwear: worn under your clothes. The swim stop at the river delta comes mid-cruise, and changing space on a boat with up to 40 guests is limited. Wear it from the hotel and you're in the water in seconds.
  • A towel. The boat doesn't provide them. One per swimmer; a spare for the foam party doesn't hurt.
  • Sunscreen and a hat. You'll be on open deck and open water for hours. Reapply after every swim.
  • Small Turkish lira notes. The bazaar runs on cash and friendly bargaining. Small notes make haggling smoother: handing over a large bill after negotiating hard is a classic tourist move that weakens your position. Cash also covers drinks from the onboard bar, which aren't included in the ticket.
  • Comfortable walking shoes. You get two full hours at the Manavgat Grand Bazaar on the Side tour, and it is enormous. Flip-flops are fine on deck; your feet will thank you for real shoes in the market.

Dressing for the bazaar

The cruise is pure holiday mode: swimwear, bare feet, foam in your hair. The bazaar is a working local market, and a little respect goes a long way. Covered shoulders is the local norm, so pack a light shirt, kaftan or cover-up to pull on when you step ashore. A dry change of shorts or a sundress over dried-off swimwear works perfectly. You don't need to dress formally: just don't wander the stalls in only a bikini.

Smart extras worth the space

  • A dry bag or plastic zip bag. The foam party on the Side tour soaks everything cheerfully. Phones, cash and cameras want waterproof shelter before the foam cannon starts.
  • A light spare layer. The fresh river water at the delta is famously icy where it meets the warm sea, that contrast is the whole attraction, and a dry T-shirt afterwards feels wonderful.
  • An empty shopping bag. Sounds silly until you're carrying spices, textiles and a souvenir tea set back to the boat.
  • Motion comfort. The river itself is calm, it's the reason we recommend this cruise to guests who dislike rough open sea, but the Side boat does head into open water for the foam party. If you're very sensitive, take whatever normally settles you, well before boarding.

What to leave at the hotel

  • Valuables you'd hate to lose. Boats are safe, but between swim stops, foam and market crowds, the less you carry, the more relaxed the day.
  • Big cameras with no waterproofing: unless they live in that dry bag. Independent photographers work the boat and sell optional photo packages if you want professional shots without the risk.
  • Heavy layers. Lunch is cooked fresh and served onboard on both tours, so you don't need to pack food either. Dietary needs? Tell us when you book and we'll pass it to the galley.

Timing notes that affect your packing

The Side tour is a full ten-hour day with the boat casting off mid-morning; the Alanya trip runs about nine hours including the coach ride through the mountains. Either way, pack for a whole day out, not a quick excursion. And remember the Grand Bazaar runs only on Mondays and Thursdays: on other days your shopping plans (and that empty bag) will have to wait.

Hotel pickup is included on both tours; the exact pickup time for your hotel is confirmed personally the evening before, so keep your phone handy the night prior.
