The Experience
Six years old is the lowest age we can take on any of our canyon runs, and this is the departure that allows it. Swimming ability is not required either, because the buoyancy jacket and a licensed guide in the boat handle that, though basic fitness helps and the day is long. Pregnancy and back, neck or heart trouble mean this is not your tour. The van picks up at your Kumköy hotel and heads inland: resort boulevards, then pine slopes and olive groves, then the cool air of Köprülü Canyon National Park. At the base you are fitted with helmet, jacket, paddle and wetsuit and briefed before pushing onto the Köprü, which is fed by snowmelt and genuinely cold. Fourteen kilometres take about two and a half to three hours. Grade II-III rapids alternate with green flats under sheer walls, the guide calls the rhythm and warns you before each drop, and the boat stops at natural pools for jumping off low rocks and swimming. Lunch is an open buffet at long wooden tables under the pines: grilled chicken, salads, seasonal fruit, a glass of çay if you want one, craft stalls to browse. Door to door the day is seven to eight hours. Adults €28, a reduced rate for children of 4 to 11, no charge for the youngest, accident insurance included. Drinks, tips, GoPro footage and any zipline, buggy or quad add-on cost extra, and you pay on the day.
