The Experience
Most excursion boats on this coast arrive with a sound system. Ours does not. Green Canyon is a protected reservoir and we keep the deck quiet on purpose, so what reaches you is birdsong in the pines, water knocking against the hull and the occasional echo off a rock face. Collection is by air-conditioned vehicle from your hotel in the Side area, followed by a climb inland to the lake. The catamaran casts off at 10:00. The big canyon comes first, cliffs narrowing and green slopes rising either side. Late morning we tie up at our own wooden platform for the first swim, and the mountain water is cold, clear and worth the shock. Lunch is cooked fresh and served at that break. Fishing rods are aboard at no charge for anyone who fancies a lazy cast. Then on to the smaller, quieter arm of the canyon and a second swim straight off the deck. Roughly four and a half hours afloat, about six from hotel door back to hotel door. Flat water throughout, which suits children and anyone who dislikes swell. Adults €33, children €20, settled on the tour day rather than up front. That buys lunch, unlimited soft drinks on the catamaran, the fishing gear, passenger insurance and both transfers. It does not buy alcohol, drinks ordered at the restaurant over lunch, photographs or extra snacks. A shorter Express version exists, with lunch at a lakeside restaurant.
