What to Bring and Wear for Green Canyon

A local crew's packing list for the Green Canyon boat and catamaran tours: swimwear, towel, sun cream, one light layer for the mountain air — and the things you don't need to carry.

Packing for Green Canyon: Less Than You Think

Green Canyon is a mountain reservoir day, not an expedition. The water is calm and sheltered, the boat does the work, and lunch is served on board on the 4.5-hour tour. Most guests overpack the first time. Here is what our crews actually see used on deck, day after day, all season long.

The Short List That Covers 90% of It

  • Swimwear, worn under your clothes. Both the boat tour and the catamaran include swimming stops in the reservoir, and changing on a boat is nobody's favourite activity. Arrive ready.
  • A towel. Simple, essential, and the single most forgotten item.
  • Sun cream and a hat. You are on open water at altitude between two canyon walls: the light bounces off the surface and catches people out even on hazy days. Reapply after every swim.
  • Sunglasses. The emerald water is dazzling around midday.
  • A dry change of clothes for the ride back to your hotel. Sitting in wet swimwear on the transfer home is a self-inflicted misery.

What to Wear on the Day

Dress like it's a beach day with a twist: swimwear underneath, light summer clothes on top. Two local notes worth knowing:

  • Bring one light layer. This is a mountain reservoir, and the air off the water is fresher than the beachfront, beautifully so in high summer, but a thin shirt or light cover-up is welcome once you're wet and the boat is moving.
  • The water is cool. The reservoir is fed from the mountains, so the swim is crisp and refreshing rather than bath-warm. That coolness is half the point on a hot Riviera afternoon, but it's kinder to know before you jump.

Footwear

Flip-flops or sandals are fine, you'll spend the day on deck, not hiking. If you own water shoes, by all means bring them for the swim stops; if you don't, there is no need to buy a pair for this trip.

Nice-to-Haves

  • A waterproof pouch for your phone. The canyon is relentlessly photogenic and you will want your camera near the water.
  • A small amount of cash for any personal extras you fancy along the way.
  • Seasickness remedies? Almost certainly not. This is a dam reservoir, not open sea: the water is calm and sheltered the whole way. Guests who dread boat trips on the Mediterranean tend to love this one for exactly that reason.

Packing for Children

Families do this trip constantly, children aged 3–11 join at a reduced rate, and the packing logic is the same, doubled: swimwear on, spare dry outfit per child, hat, and their own sun cream. If your child uses armbands or a float for confidence, bring them; the swim stops are optional, and nobody is obliged to get in the water.

What to Leave at the Hotel

Heels, valuables you'd worry about, and anything that can't handle a splash. The boat has shade and space to relax, and hotel pickup can be arranged from Side and Manavgat daily, from Alanya daily in summer, and from Belek and Antalya on Mondays and Thursdays, so you are never far from your base, and there's no reason to haul your life around with you.

Where This Day Fits in Your Week

Think of Green Canyon as the cool, green pause in a beach-heavy Riviera holiday, mountains and emerald water instead of sand and salt. If you're still sketching out your week, our complete local guide to Side excursions shows how it slots in alongside everything else on the coast. For the money side, see the price breakdown, and if you're bringing the family, our first-timer and family guide answers the "will the kids enjoy it" question properly.
