Ask ten visitors when to go rafting in Side and you will get ten confident, contradictory answers. As Atalay Tours, the local operator running boats on the Köprülü Canyon river all season, we can give you the honest version: the river itself is remarkably consistent, and what actually changes through the year is everything around it: the crowds, the heat on shore, the light in the canyon. Here is what the day really feels like as the season moves, and how to book smart for each phase.
The short answer
Our Köprülü Canyon Rafting Tour operates on an all-year schedule with departures available every day of the week, and the same is true of the rafting and jeep safari combo. So there is no month in which the trip simply is not offered. The question is not "when can I go" but "what kind of day do I want", and that is where the season matters.
Why the river holds up all summer
Köprülü Canyon's water comes down from the Taurus Mountains, and it stays ice-cold and crystal-clear even in the height of summer. That is why the route carries a guaranteed water level: Turkey's most popular rafting river keeps a vigorous flow even during the hottest months, and the 12-kilometre course keeps its class II–III character rather than fading to a float. This is the single most important seasonal fact, because it removes the biggest fear people have: that a late-season booking means a disappointing, sluggish river. It does not.
Early summer: the connoisseur's window
Early in the season the canyon is at its greenest and the riverbanks feel fresh. The swim stops are bracing — that mountain water earns its reputation — and the whole day runs at a calmer rhythm because the coast has not yet filled up. If you like your adventure with breathing room, this is a lovely time: same rapids, same riverside lunch under the trees, fewer boats sharing the water. Families and first-timers who want an unhurried briefing and plenty of guide attention tend to be happiest here.
July and August: the peak, and how to enjoy it
High summer is when Side is fullest, and it is also when the river makes the most sense. While the beaches bake, the canyon offers the one thing no pool can: cold, fast-moving water. The atmosphere on the river is at its liveliest, more boats, more splashing battles, more noise and laughter, and many guests love exactly that energy.
Two pieces of peak-season advice. First, reserve a day or two ahead rather than gambling on the day itself: reservation with us is free and you pay on the day of the tour, so booking early costs you nothing and guarantees your seat. Second, prepare for the sun the way the tour terms suggest, swimwear under shorts and a T-shirt, towel, dry change of clothes, sunscreen, sunglasses, and non-slip water-resistant footwear (flip-flops are not recommended; proper river shoes can be rented or bought on site). The shaded riverside lunch break is built into the day precisely so you recover out of the sun.
September and October: the quiet reward
As the peak crowds thin, the canyon becomes the photographer's version of itself: softer light, quieter banks, and — thanks to that guaranteed flow — a river that is still very much awake. The swim pools feel kinder after a long warm season, and boats spread out along the course. If you are a couple, a keen photographer, or simply someone who prefers experiences without an audience, this stretch of the season is arguably the best-kept secret on the coast. The optional professional photo and video service is worth considering here, when the light flatters the canyon most.
Beating the crowds and the heat, whatever the month
- Book ahead, cancel freely. Reservations are free, payment happens on the tour day, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before, so an early booking carries zero risk.
- Let us handle the timing. Your hotel pickup is confirmed personally the evening before the tour, so you never need to chase departure details or guess at schedules.
- Leave valuables at the hotel. The tour terms recommend it, and the optional photographer means you do not have to risk your own camera on the water.
- Know the small extras. Drinks, footwear rental and the photo package sit outside the ticket price on both tours: our rafting prices guide lists them plainly.
- Check the practical questions early. Health restrictions, what to wear and swimming-confidence questions are all covered in our rafting FAQ.
So when should you book?
If you want the liveliest, loudest version of the river, come in July or August and reserve ahead. If you want the canyon closer to yourself, aim for the edges of the season, early summer for green banks and cool air off the water, September and October for soft light and quiet. Whichever window you choose, the departures run daily, the water level is guaranteed, and the price is the same fair rate all year: €20 per adult and €12 per child for the rafting day, or €28 per adult and €17 per child if you add the jeep safari.
